Your organisation probably has neurodivergent employees who are struggling right now and it's likely that most of them haven't told you.
The Risk
Unmanaged ADHD in the workplace has a real business cost and most of it goes unnoticed until it's too late.
When neurodivergent employees don't have access to the right support, the impact compounds quickly:
- Dysregulation and overwhelm lead to inconsistent performance and missed deadlines
- Missed deadlines and mistakes lead to difficult conversations and disciplinaries
- Disciplinaries and feeling unsupported accelerate burnout or disconnect from the role
- Burnout leads to prolonged absence. With nearly 40% of total staff turnover costs now attributable to mental health issues, the financial impact compounds quickly (Deloitte, 2022)
One recent real example shared with me involved four weeks of absence plus lost client-facing work, estimated at £30,000 for a single employee.
- Feeling unsupported long-term leads to high turnover and the cost of replacing an employee is estimated at 6-9 months of their salary
And because 80% of adults with ADHD are undiagnosed, most of this is happening silently. Your employees probably aren't asking for help. Not because they don't need it, but because they don't yet understand why they're struggling.
4 in 5 UK adults assessed for ADHD say they have never received any workplace support or reasonable adjustments. (The Owl Centre, 2025)
The Gap
Most workplace support focuses on accommodations and awareness. However employees are not learning tools that help them to manage their ADHD symptoms themselves.
Support doesn't work because it's ineffective. It's ineffective because it's usually not designed for how ADHD and neurodivergent brains actually work.
Even when support is in place, it's often focused on doing more and trying to be more productive without addressing the root cause. Dysregulation that shows up as poor time management, emotional outbursts, inconsistency, or disengagement.
